McDonald´s

It’s no surprise that college students like good deals. Cheap food is one thing that students everywhere are experts at finding. McDonald’s often provides a meal at a low price no matter where in the world one is. Yet there is a stigma attached with McDonald’s – it’s simply an American export and unchanging around the world. I used to fall into the camp of those who believed that but, after traveling abroad and tasting McDonald’s’ food in various countries, I’ve come to realize that there is actually culture buried within McDonald’s and, thankfully, it is generally cheap.

Argentina is known for its beef. It is said that one can gain 10 pounds in 10 days there. Thus, the meat used in an Argentinean McDonald’s hamburger is actually of much higher quality than one could find in the United States. The US might have invented the cheap burger, but Argentina made the cheap burger gourmet.

In Israel, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the “Kosher” sign on many McDonald’s. Thus, their meat is held to a higher standard and the menu at these restaurants lacks the standard cheeseburgers and Big Macs. No matter, as Israeli McDonald’s fill the options with new varieties of burgers.

I’ve been told by friends who have traveled to other countries that the offerings in McDonald’s change from country to country. It may not be a five-course meal, but it is cheap. And it may have started in the United States, but all around the world different cultures add their own unique twists to the standardized menu. So next time you travel abroad, stop in a McDonald’s. You may just be surprised by what you’re eating.
